Schullerland version 2.0

The shape of things to come emerges. The new boss (John Charles) is the same as the old boss (RHS and Arvella) in terms of keeping it a family business. No congregational representation in governance for them. It remains a tv show with an audience attached, and the dynastic succession devolves onto the founder’s grandson, Bobby V. Schuller.

The letter from John Charles contains an understandable and persuasive account of why the Crystal Cathedral was sold to the Catholics – “Though other offers were greater, the campus would not have remained a site for Christian worship.” Unfortunately, the document appended in the copy available at this web site contradicts this. Who are you going to believe – the letter signed by John Charles, President and CEO? Or the appended page, titled “The Miracle”, and annotated by the Webmaster, “This document is CHAPMAN UNIVERSITY’S Final Offer to purchase the Crystal Cathedral Campus which included the proposal to sell the core buildings back to the Ministry to enable the congregation to remain at the Crystal Cathedral Campus in perpetuity.”

Fortunately, we live in a religiously pluralistic society, and can affiliate and disaffiliate with leaders and groups of our own free will. As John Charles’s letter puts it, Sheila Schuller Coleman and Jim Penner have moved their ministry to another location. Crystal Cathedral members have the freedom to follow them, or to stay put, or to find a different church home. It’s a momentous decision, and what suits one person might not suit another. It is worth taking to the Lord in prayer.

May peace be with us all.
