Lawrence Wilkes, born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, became a Christian at age 20 and felt a definite call to ministry at that time. He was ordained into the ministry by the North American Baptist Conference in 1965.

Dr. Wilkes and his wife, Nancy, were married in July of 1970. Nancy, who is now retired, volunteers most of her time to numerous Southern California non-profit organizations. Their child, Christine is married and a teacher at a prominent Southern California Academy.

Dr. Wilkes earned his Bachelor of Religious Education at Providence College and Theological Seminary; Bachelor of Arts in History at the University of Sioux Falls; Master of Divinity at Golden Gate Baptist Theological Seminary; and Doctor of Philosophy at California Graduate School of Theology.

Dr. Wilkes joined the staff at the Crystal Cathedral in 1991. In 1993, he accepted an appointment from Dr. Robert H. Schuller and was later named Dean of the Robert Schuller School for Preaching. He also served as the Evening Service preacher and Minister of Worship Hospitality for the Crystal Cathedral. In January of 1996, Dr. Wilkes became an ordained minister of the Reformed Church in America. His book, "He Walks Among Us”, was released in April 1999. As Dean of the Robert Schuller School for Preaching, Dr. Wilkes developed a unique video library of over 3,500 video tapes of famous preachers. He was responsible for developing the Doctor of Ministry programs at the Robert Schuller School for Preaching with the United Theological Seminary of Trotwood, Ohio, with the George Fox University Evangelical Seminary of Portland, Oregon, and the California Graduate School of Theology in La Habra.

He remained on staff with Crystal Cathedral Ministries until December 31, 2006. However, Lawrence continues ministry at the Cathedral as a minister on-call for weddings and funerals.

Beginning in January 2007, Lawrence became part of the administrative staff at California Graduate School of Theology. As of 2008, Dr. Wilkes was appointed as Director of the Doctor of Ministry Program, which he continues to lead with great passion.
