A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing

Op Ed: by James Grimm – Posted July 6, 2011

Let the saga begin Sunday, July 3, 2011 with the announcement in the O.C Register that “The Rev. Robert H. Schuller, who started his ministry in an Orange drive-in theater more than five decades ago, has been voted off the board of Crystal Cathedral. It continued, “The church has not released information about the board meeting where Schuller, 84, was ousted, but his son Robert A. Schuller, who was himself forced out of the cathedral by his sisters and brothers-in-law three years ago, confirmed it Sunday.”

Hardly had the ink dried on that story than a rebuttal published on July 4, 2011 and updated: July 5, 2011 1:30 p.m. stating that, “Crystal Cathedral's founder Robert H. Schuller has not been ousted from the financially ailing megachurch's board of directors, but has been "honored" as a non-voting chairman of the board emeritus, church leaders announced today.” It continues saying, “Sheila Schuller Coleman, who leads Crystal Cathedral Ministries, issued a statement Monday that her father and founding pastor, Robert H. Schuller, will continue to be a non-voting member of the church's board.”

In a related article published in the L.A. Times on July 5, 2011 reported a “church official” said, “A Crystal Cathedral spokesman said Monday that reports that the Rev. Robert H. Schuller was ousted are false.” It turns out the “church official” in question is none other than the preeminent John Charles. He is quoted as saying, Schuller "was not voted off the board." He is still board chairman emeritus." The article continues declaring, “In Monday's statement, Charles said the move would free up Schuller's time for more speaking engagements and a writing project. "He will also continue to speak in the pulpit of the Crystal Cathedral and on the "Hour of Power" and meet with staff in creative and vision-casting meetings."

Just about the time one would think he’d heard it all, the article has this juicy little tidbit. “In the statement, Sheila Schuller Coleman, the executive director of the church, said she would continue to consult her father for insight and advice. "Dad will continue to provide leadership for this ministry through me for as long as possible," she said in the statement. "I have and will continue to defer to his wisdom and honor him for his unprecedented accomplishments." Now isn’t that just about the sweetest thing you ever heard!

So let’s summarize this bizarre saga: (1) Robert A. reports his dad has been voted off the board of Crystal Cathedral. (2) None other than Sheila Schuller Coleman refutes,

Robert A’s report asserting, that her father and founding pastor, Robert H. Schuller, will continue to be a non-voting member of the church's board. She goes so far as to say, “(3) To put frosting on the cake a “church official/spokesman,” one John Charles, is quoted as saying, Schuller "was not voted off the board." He is still board chairman emeritus."

Now, accordingly, we sheep are to believe that Schuller’s removal as a voting member of the “board” to a “non-voting chairman of the board emeritus” is an honor. Be assured, the only reason for this “honor” being bestowed upon him is to “free up Schuller's time for more speaking engagements and a writing project.” How thoughtful.

Emeritus” does mean, “one is permitted to retain as an honorary title the rank of the last office held.” What is a “Consistory?” We must turn to the RCA, the denomination to which the Cathedral is rather loosely affiliated, for a definition. It states, “In each individual congregation, the three offices [the senior pastor, an elder and a deacor]…are brought together in consistory. This … is the governing body of the local congregation and is chosen periodically from the membership of the congregation. … The minister is always the president of the consistory.”

In an O.C. article published July 11, 2010 states that RHS, “will assume the newly created position of chairman of Crystal Cathedral’s consistory, which is the church’s board of directors.” However, the O.C. Register reported on Sunday, January 1, 2006 he announced that he was stepping down as senior pastor. Is there any record of the congregation choosing Gwen Myers and who is Rick Mysse other than “a denominational executive for the Reform Church of America” (these two voted to remove RHS as a member of the “consistory” and then appointed him President Emeritus of the consistory) which one is an elder and which one is a deacon? When were they ordained? Come to think of it, is Sheila Coleman (wife of Jim who carries the title of President of Crystal Cathedral Ministries) as the “senior pastor” the consistory president?

Wow! Woof, woof! Something is rotten in Denmark! Is it remotely possible that someone is trying to pull the wool over the remaining supporters of the CC, its dwindling congregation and the general public? This story is as crooked as a wolf’s hind leg. If knowing the truth sets us free, the CC supporters, congregants and the public enslaved by lies and subterfuge. What a black eye this gives Christianity!
